Garvey’s SuperValu County Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Final

Abbeydorney: 1-18

Ballyheigue: 0-10

Abbeydorney were first to book a place in this year’s Garvey’s SuperValu County Senior Hurling Championship Final with a comfortable win over Ballyheigue to reach their first final since 2005. It finished 1 – 18 (21) to 0 – 10 (10).

Ballyheigue captain Colin Walsh and Abbeydorney captain James O’Connor with referee Ciaran O’Regan.

Aided by a strong breeze blowing from black spot to black spot, like so often in matches this season at Austin Stack Park, Abbeydorney raced into an early lead shooting 10 points without reply.

Michael O’Leary contributed 0 – 09 (0 – 08f) to Abbeydorney’s tally on the night.

Ballyheigue were finding it difficult to get any sort of foothold in the game. Fatigue built up after last week’s extra time, lack of experience at the business end of the County Championship, or Abbeydorney a bit further on in the physical stakes compared to this young Ballyheigue side all playing a part perhaps?

Philip Lucid was Ballyheigue’s top scorer with 0 – 06 (0 – 05f).

Ballyheigue’s accuracy in front of goal certainly didn’t help their cause but when Oisín Maunsell goaled for Abbeydorney at around the 40th minute, it was game over.

Stephen Egan about to cut out Eric Walsh’s goal chance for Ballyheigue.

Abbeydorney will play Ballyduff in the Final with dreams of ending the 50-year spell since last being crowned champions in 1974.
