The Kerry senior hurlers had an excellent opening to their Joe McDonagh Cup campaign on Sunday last at Austin Stack Park when they had a 1 – 20 to 0 -13 win over Meath in wet and windy weather conditions.
They will have an away game on this Saturday, 31 October when they travel to meet Westmeath in Round 2 at 1.30pm in TEG Cusack Park, Mullingar.
Again, under current Government regulations this match will again be played behind closed doors.
Westmeath suffered a 4 – 25 to 1 – 15 loss to Antrim last Sunday so they will have to win to remain in the hunt for a place in the Final.
Round 3 will be away to Antrim on Saturday, November 14 at Corrigan Park, Belfast while Round 4 will be at home to Carlow at Austin Stack Park on Saturday, 21 November. The Final is scheduled for Sunday, 13 December as a curtain raiser to the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final.

On behalf of all the hurling community, sincere sympathy is extended to the families of 2 men who died recently and who contributed so much to the G.A.A. over their lives – Mike Joe Quilter and Francis Cantillon, both members of the Causeway club.
After winning a minor co. medal in 1949 with St. Michael’s and a senior medal with Ballyduff in 1955, Francis put his energy into reviving the Causeway club thereafter and served in several roles including Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary ,Treasurer and delegate to the North Kerry Hurling Board and County Board. He was instrumental in the development of their Sportsfield and was involved at many levels both in business and in the community. In 2008 he received the Causeway G.A.A. ‘Hall of Fame’ Award.
Mike Joe was a native of Lixnaw with whom he played hurling at minor, senior and intermediate levels. Since he came to live in Causeway in 1981 he made a very significant contribution to the Causeway club and to the wider community. He held several positions within the club including that of Treasurer and underage mentor. He was the delegate to the North Kerry Hurling Board for the past ten years and was a serving member of the CCC of the Board. As well as his involvement in fundraising, he was also working on researching the history of the club. Just last January at the club Co. Championship Victory Social, he was awarded the Causeway G.A.A. ‘Hall of Fame’ Award.
