Garvey’s Senior County Championship
This year’s County Final which is fixed for Saturday week in Austin Stack Park, Tralee at 7pm will be an all-district affair featuring East Kerry and Mid Kerry. East Kerry were first to secure their place in the final with a win over St Brendan’s. On the night, St Brendan’s never really got going. Towards the end, Diarmuid O Connor was moved which made them more of a scoring threat but it just wasn’t their night. East Kerry had to contest the semi-final without David Clifford but in his absence up stepped Evan Cronin, Paudie Clifford and Dara Moynihan among others. They put on a strong display and with David back, they will be confident going into the final.
The second semi-final was one for the ages and will live long in the memory. It was end to end stuff and full credit to Mid Kerry and Dr Crokes for going at it and leaving everything on the field. It was tense and competitive but was played in the right spirit. With all the twists and turns, it was very difficult to call a winner. With minutes left in additional time, Gavin O Grady got the equalising goal and Jack O’Connor’s point was the winning score.
The County final will be live-streamed on the Kerry GAA website. There will be interviews and special guests along with full live coverage and commentary from Gary O’Sullivan and Seán O’Sullivan. Austin Stacks are Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Champions
When all seemed to point to a Kenmare win, Austin Stacks showed their grit and determination to get a goal in the dying minutes of additional time. Kenmare Shamrocks played very well throughout the 60 minutes of normal time and perhaps will regret not seeing out the game. The goal forced the game into extra time and Austin Stacks played the better football for this period of the game. The Cup was presented to the Captain by Tim Murphy, Chairman of Kerry County Board and Jack O’Shea was presented with the Man of the Match trophy by Anthony Clifford on behalf of the sponsors Kerry Petroleum.
The earlier game of the day in Fitzgerald Stadium was the relegation play-off between Templenoe and Kilcummin. Even though, there were 4 red cards, the game was played in a fair and competitive manner. Templenoe proved too strong for Kilcummin and finished convincing winners. Templenoe have won themselves a second year in the Senior grade whereas Kilcummin will return to Intermediate for next year.
Update from Croke Park
The GAA’s Ard Chomhairle held a meeting on-line on Saturday where it was decided to formally proceed with plans to stage the All-Ireland senior, under-20 and minor inter-county football and hurling championships for 2020. The decision was made following positive interaction with the Government and an understanding that specific financial supports will be made available. Due to the reduced level of funding available as a result of the pandemic, a series of strict financial controls will be put in place by the Association which will govern the costs and preparation of teams. In addition to this a plan and series of protocols produced by the Association’s Covid Advisory Group and which will facilitate the safe staging of inter-county games will be circulated to counties. Following consultation with the counties it was agreed that London, Warwickshire and Lancashire will not be involved in the 2020 championships. The special emergency powers for the administration of the Association have been reapproved and extended until December 4.
Hurling
The highlight of the Kerry hurling year goes ahead on this Sunday, 20 September with the Final of the 2020 Garvey’s SuperValu Co. Senior Hurling Championship (Corn Neilus Ó Floinn) between current holders, Causeway and Kilmoyley. Venue is Austin Stack Park where there will be a 3.30p.m. throw in time. The game will be live streamed.
Intermediate
The curtain raiser will be the meeting of Tralee Parnell’s and Dr. Crokes, Killarney in the Final of the Co. Intermediate Hurling Championship [Corn Antaine Ó Murchú]. It will be a historic occasion for the Tralee side as they will be playing in this decider for the first time. Dr. Crokes will be aiming to win their third title having won it previously in 1999 & 2001. This game will get underway at 1.00p.m. and will also be live streamed.
Minor
Congratulations to Ballyduff on winning the Keane’s SuperValu Co. Minor hurling championship. They defeated Ballyheigue in last Saturday’s Final by 1 – 13 to 1 – 9. Corn Seán Loibhéad was presented by Tim Murphy, Cathaoirleach Coiste Contae Chiarraí, C.L.G., to the Ballyduff captain, Dylan Moriarty, while centre half back Kevin Goulding won the Player of the Match Award. This is Ballyduff’s 8th title [previous wins were in 1972, 1973, 1975, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2001 & 2003]
Junior
The Co. Junior Hurling Championship got underway on last Saturday when Ballyheigue had a 3 – 12 to 0- 5 home win over St. Pat’s East Kerry. Duagh will also be taking part in this competition which will be played on a league system with the top 2 teams to contest the Final.
Under 12
Lee Strand Coiste na nÓg Under 12 Hurling league Phase 2, Round 4 results: Group A – Ballyduff 5 – 6 Tralee Parnell’s 2 – 3; Group C – Lixnaw v Abbeydorney [postponed]; Firies 2 – 12 South Kerry 3 – 5.
Under 16
The Final of the Lee Strand Coiste na nÓg Under 16 Championship between Lixnaw and Crotta/Kilmoyley did not go ahead last weekend as scheduled. In the Plate competition St. Brendan’s defeated Rathmore in the semi-final by 2 – 13 to 1 – 9 on Sunday at Rathmore. They will now play Tralee Parnell’s in the Final. Details of both these Finals will be posted on both the North Kerry Hurling and Coiste na nÓg Facebook pages as soon as available.
