The Battle for the Bishop Moynihan Begins on Friday!

The opening game of the 2020 Garvey’s Senior Football Championship will be played this Friday and by Sunday 16 teams will have been reduced to 8. Such is the nature of a straight knockout Championship. Extra time and ‘winner on the day’ regulations will apply as required.

Kerry GAA will be live-streaming three of the games which can be purchased on the Kerry GAA website for €5 per game. RTE are showing Killarney Legion V Kerins O’Rahillys live on Sunday and TG4 are showing Dr Crokes V Austin Stacks live on Friday. Radio Kerry will have updates from all games. Kerry GAA are providing as many platforms as possible for people to see and/or hear the game. We know that people are disappointed not to be able to attend the games but for the moment, we must abide by the rules that cap attendances at 200 people (including those on the field). We remind supporters not to attend the grounds without a ticket. Those who are lucky enough to have a ticket are encouraged to wear a face covering/mask at the game. All match programmes will be available to download from the Kerry GAA website.

Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin Minor Championship

The draw for the Keane’s SuperValu Minor Championship Semi Finals was made last Thursday morning and resulted in the following pairings East Kerry V Killarney Legion and South Kerry V St Brendans. The games are fixed for Monday at 6pm – the East Kerry v Killarney Legion game is on in Fitzgerald Stadium and South Kerry v St Brendans is on in Killorglin. Extra time and ‘winner on the day’ applies if needed.

GAA Museum announces plans to remember Bloody Sunday 100 years on

The GAA Museum at Croke Park has launched a poignant commemorative events series to mark the centenary of Bloody Sunday, the darkest day in the history of the GAA and a pivotal day in the Irish War of Independence. As the national custodian of the archives and artefacts of the Gaelic Athletic Association, the GAA Museum has unveiled a diverse and sensitively curated series of events entitled ‘Remembering Bloody Sunday’, 100 years on from the day 14 civilians were killed by the RIC and 60 more were injured during 90 seconds of gun fire during a football challenge match between Dublin and Tipperary at Croke Park. The programme will include talks, tours, a new exhibition and a community programme running from August until November 2020. The first event in the series, the annual GAA Museum Summer School, takes place this Friday 14 August from 10am-3.30pm. In keeping with the Bloody Sunday commemorations, this year’s event will focus on the theme of Sport, Peace & Reconciliation, examining the role sport can play in the peace and reconciliation process and the impact that sport has on international affairs. The high-profile event has attracted a distinguished panel of speakers, including historian Dr. Richard McElligott, Diarmaid Marsden from Ulster GAA, and Gareth Harper from Peace Players International. The GAA Museum is also running special weekly commemorative Bloody Sunday guided tours of Croke Park starting 15 August, which will take visitors through the sequence of events on the fateful day and discuss the impact Bloody Sunday had on both the GAA and Ireland itself. Hurling

After last weekend’s games the way is clear for the semi-finals of the Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry Co. Senior Hurling Championship [Corn Neilus Ó Floinn]. The draw for the pairings resulted in Causeway versus Ballyduff and Abbeydorney versus Kilmoyley. Both games will be played at Austin Stack Park, Tralee on the weekend of 5/6 September. For the record the following were the first round results: Ballyduff 1 – 20 Ballyheigue 0 – 15; Abbeydorney 1 – 18 Lixnaw 0 – 19; Kilmoyley 0 – 15 St. Brendan’s 0 – 12 and Causeway 0-14 Crotta 0-13. The Final is scheduled for the weekend of 19/20 September.

Intermediate

The quarter finals of the Co. Intermediate Hurling Championship [Corn Antóin Ó Murchú] went ahead last weekend. In the local South Kerry derby, Kilgarvan had a 2 – 13 to 1 – 13 win over Kenmare; 3 games on were played on Monday – Tralee Parnell’s 1 – 25 St. Brendan’s 2 – 10; Lixnaw 0 – 11 Kilmoyley 2 – 18; Dr. Crokes 3 – 21 Crotta O’Neill’s 0- 11.

Senior

Round 3 of the Rhyno Quality Feeds North Kerry Senior Hurling Championship is due to go ahead on Monday next, 24 August. Fixtures are: Ballyduff v Causeway; Lixnaw v St. Brendan’s and Kilmoyley v Crotta. Check the North Kerry Hurling Facebook page for updates on match details.

Minor

The Keane’s SuperValu Co. Minor Hurling Championship is scheduled to commence on this weekend with the 4 quarter finals: On Friday, 21 August Abbeydorney play Crotta/Kilmoyley at Abbeydorney; Lixnaw meet St. Brendan’s at Lixnaw; and Ballyheigue are at home to Tralee Parnell’s. All games at 6.00p.m. The Ballyduff v Kenmare/Kilgarvan/Dr. Crokes game will go ahead at Ballyduff at 4.00p.m.on Saturday. Extra time if necessary and result on the day in all games.
