Intermediate Club Football Championship - Round 1

Glenflesk    2-09

Brosna    0-14

Brosna traveled to Glenflesk on Easter Monday for the first round of the Intermediate championship on the back of some excellent Co. League form where they have the maximum points from their 3 games. Glenflesk for their part were also bringing good form into the game but would have been concerned with the concession of 5 goals in their recent Co. League defeat to Beaufort.

Brosna started much brighter and had the lion’s share of possession in the opening quarter and had opened up a 6 points to 3 lead after 18 minutes. The impressive Adam Barry scored 2 from play, Tom McGoldrick had 2 frees and a point each from Flor McAuliffe and Kieran O’Donnell had Brosna in firm control. A point from Darragh Roche in the 20th minute cut the gap to 2 and this kick started a purple patch for Glenflesk and Lee O’Donoghue set up Michael O’Shea for a well taken goal in the 22nd minute. Jeff and Lee O’Donoghue added further points and this saw Glenflesk take a 2 point lead into the break.

Half Time Score; Glenflesk 1-06, Brosna 0-07.

Glenflesk started the second half as they had finished the first and straight from the throw in added another goal, Lee O’Donoghue who was having a great battle with Maurice O’Keeffe, fielded a long ball and brilliantly set up Darragh Roche for the goal. This gave Glenflesk a 5 point lead but they wouldn’t score again for 18 minutes. Brosna took complete control of the midfield battle and rattled off 6 points without reply. Tom McGoldrick scored 3 frees and also added 1 from play, Timmy Finnegan drove forward from midfield for an excellently taken point and Peter Curtin scored the pick of the lot when rounding 2 men and slotting over from an angle to give Brosna a 1 point lead with 12 minutes remaining. At this point it looked like there was no way back for Glenflesk but to their credit they defended bravely and denied Brosna the chance to extend their lead. When Kerry Minor Christopher O’Donoghue drove forward from corner back to kick Glenflesk level, it proved an inspirational score and Michael O’Shea and Jeff O’Donoghue kicked further points to put Glenflesk 2 clear with 6 minutes to play.

Glenflesk packed the defence for the closing minutes and defended brilliantly to deny Brosna scoring opportunities. Tom McGoldrick closed the gap to 1 in the final minute and with 3 minutes of injury time to be played Brosna drove forward in search of an equaliser. They were given one last chance with the final kick of the game when they were awarded a free 46 meters out but it dropped short and Glenflesk advanced to the Quarter Final.

In truth Brosna were unlucky considering the quality of their performance but Glenflesk’s ability to score goals was the difference on the day. They are rewarded with a home Quarter Final against Laune Rangers.
